US actor Tom Hanks has received an honorary doctorate from Hardvard University. In front of more than 9,000 graduates, he called for “freedom for all” and the preservation of the truth.

Two-time Oscar winner Tom Hanks (“Philadelphia”, “Forrest Gump”) can look forward to another award. The 66-year-old actor received an honorary doctorate from Harvard University in Cambridge (Massachusetts) on Thursday. The Hollywood star took to the stage in the typical graduate attire – with a hat, gown and sash.

Hanks also gave the speech as a so-called “commencement speaker” at the graduation ceremony for this year’s graduates of the elite university. He doesn’t know much about Latin, enzymes, or world politics, but he’s learned a lot in life, Hanks joked. In his speech, which also included wisdom from Marlon Brando and comparisons to superheroes, Hanks emphasized the importance of fighting to preserve the truth. He urged the audience to stand up for “freedom for all” instead of remaining indifferent.

At major US universities, it is common for politicians or other celebrities to address graduates at the celebrations.

Hanks, who has recently starred in films such as “Elvis”, “Pinocchio” and “A Man Called Otto”, presented his new film “Asteroid City” at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this week. The Wes Anderson directorial work also stars Scarlett Johansson, Jason Schwartzman and Bryan Cranston.
