Why is World Vegan Day celebrated today?

This movement also argues that By reducing the demand for meat, eggs, milk, leather, wool and other products, you reduce resource expenditure and waste, which benefits the environment.

Diet: what does a vegan eat?

The plant-based diet is distributed between vegetables and greens, legumes, nuts and seeds, whole grains and fruits.

Do not forget that vitamin B12 supplementation is necessary and in some cases also vitamin D (although many vitamin D3 supplements are usually of animal origin). In any case, it should be a health professional who determines in which cases it is necessary to supplement with vitamin D.

Another issue in which vegans should be careful is ultra-processed foods and choose the most natural products possible.

When did veganism start?

The date to celebrate World Vegan Day was chosen because on November 1, 1944, Donald Watson, along with his wife Elsie Shrigley founded “The Vegan Society”, a society with a few dozen members who ate plants. That same day the first issue of the informative “The Vegan News” was also published.

Difference between veganism and vegetarianism

It often happens that we confuse the terms of veganism and vegetarianism, because in neither case is animal meat eaten. However, there are clear differences.

Beyond food, veganism is a lifestyle. Vegans postulate that human beings are not above any other animal species and therefore reject any derivative product, even if it is not edible. Therefore, it is said that veganism is a ethical and philosophical stance.

Vegans do not incorporate any article that involves animal exploitation for its preparation, including dairy, egg, cheese, honey, silk, leather and wool. In turn, they also do not attend zoos, aquariums or horse runs for the same reasons.

Vegetarianism is a diet and aims to be as healthy as possible. Those who grow it can consume cow’s or goat’s milk, honey, butter, eggs and all kinds of dairy.

Both vegan and vegetarian diets must take into account nutritional balance. This is one of the aspects that they should take care of the most, since according to experts, a well-planned plant-based diet can meet the needs of people of all ages. Thus, for a plate to be healthy, it must include half the vegetables and the rest of cereals or legumes, seeds and tubers.
