Bruce Willis: Family first thought of “Hollywood hearing loss”

In an emotional essay, Tallulah Willis describes the beginnings of Bruce Willis’ dementia.

Action hero Bruce Willis (68)’s family missed the first signs of his dementia. This is reported by his daughter Tallulah Willis (29).

The family thought his hearing had suffered from filming

“It started with a kind of vague unresponsiveness that the family traced back to a Hollywood hearing loss,” reveals the youngest daughter of Willis and Demi Moore, 60, in the piece released Wednesday (May 31). It was believed that his hearing had been affected while filming the Die Hard film series.

Over time, her father’s “unresponsiveness” widened. But Tallulah didn’t think of an illness, but mistakenly took it “personally”. “He had had two babies with my stepmother, Emma Heming Willis, and I thought he’d lost interest in me.” When she was young, she persuaded herself: “I’m not beautiful enough for my mother, I’m not interesting enough for my father.”

“Avoidance and Denial”

The 29-year-old describes how much she suffered from the separation of her parents and the constant attention from the public. She had previously reported her eating disorder, drug addiction and depression. Her problems would have contributed to her father’s illness not being noticed: “I admit that I have met Bruce’s decline over the past few years with a dose of avoidance and denial that I am not proud of. The truth is that I myself was sick to deal with.”

She has been suffering from anorexia for four years. After her fiancé left her last summer, she went into therapy and received another diagnosis: “Borderline Personality Disorder, an illness that affects the ability to regulate emotions and find stability in relationships.”

Tallulah Willis continued, “While I was caught up in my body dysmorphia and flaunted it on Instagram, my dad struggled in silence.” She describes the moment when she became “painfully” aware that her father was seriously ill:

“I was at a Martha’s Vineyard wedding in the summer of 2021 and the father of the bride gave a moving speech.” Suddenly she realized that she would never see her father give a speech at her wedding. “It was devastating. I left the dining table, went outside and cried in the bushes.”

She wants to be strong for her father now

In the meantime, she is doing much better in terms of health and mentally and she can finally be strong for her family and her father. “I now have the tools to be present in all facets of my life, especially my relationship with my father. I can bring him an energy that’s bright and sunny no matter where I’ve been.”

For his birthday in March, she posted on her Instagram page that her father was her number one: “I love him and he loves me – what a joy!” He also recognizes her: “He still knows who I am and shines when I enter the room.”

In early 2022, the family announced that Bruce Willis was ill

Willis’ family announced in February 2023 that the actor had been diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia. A year earlier, she had already made it public that the Hollywood star was suffering from the language disorder aphasia.

Emma Heming-Willis (44) and Bruce Willis have two daughters, Mabel (11) and Evelyn (9). He has children Rumer, 34, Scout, 31, and Tallulah, 29, with ex-wife Demi Moore. Just a few weeks ago, Rumer gave birth to his first granddaughter, Louetta. The blended family spends a lot of time together.
