The creator of “Scenes of a marriage”, Hagai Levi, is the same one who made “The affair”, also focused not on one but two marriages, with a peculiar narrative structure that stood out on the occasion of its premiere and shone in its first seasons. The chapters are divided into two parts corresponding to the two main characters played by Dominic West and Ruth Wilson, and in each fragment the same situation is told from the point of view of both.

The viewer thus perceives the subjectivity of each character, making Noah’s story and Alison’s about the same reality diametrically opposed. They interest around the central issues of the plot but especially apparently secondary elements such as the clothing that each of them wore. There it is aimed at a playful experience for the viewer. For instance, what Noah remembers Alison wearing the night he fell in love with her was far more provocative than what she actually wore. The subjective experience of each character as an anchor to the misrepresentation of reality when it is transformed into a memory.

All these series about stories of contemporary couples surely have some point of inspiration in the trilogy of Richard Linklater and that unforgettable couple composed by Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy, who walked Paris and other cities at 20, 30 and 40. And As is known, “Scenes of a marriage” is directly inspired by Bergman’s “Scenes of married life”, to which are added these new formal and conceptual elements that are now in command.
