The abdication of Queen Margrethe II is imminent. She has already completed her last public appointment.
Denmark’s abdicating Queen Margrethe II has mastered what is likely to be her last public appointment before the change of throne. At her last audience as acting regent, the 83-year-old received almost 80 people at Christiansborg Palace, who were able to thank her for awards such as orders or medals, appointments or similar.
Now Margrethe’s diary is empty for the rest of the week – until Sunday, when she wants to sign her abdication and pass the throne on to her son Crown Prince Frederik (55). She surprisingly announced this step in her New Year’s speech.
Public audiences with the Queen in Copenhagen normally take place twice a month. For example, if she was unable to go due to illness or a trip abroad, Frederik usually filled in for her. As the television station TV 2 calculated, Margrethe held around 1,000 audiences over the course of her almost 52 years on the throne.
