Richard Lugner: Building contractor dies at 91

The Austrian building contractor Richard Lugner has died at the age of 91. Family circles confirmed this to the news agency dpa.

The Austrian building contractor Richard Lugner, who became known for his appearances alongside Hollywood stars at the Vienna Opera Ball, has died. This was confirmed to the German Press Agency by family circles. Lugner was only released from hospital at the weekend. “He’s fine again,” his wife Simone Reiländer told “oe24”. “After the infusion, he immediately felt much better. The tests have shown that he is in tip-top shape,” she explained.

Lugner married in June

In June, Lugner married his wife, whom he nicknamed “Bienchen”. It was a tradition that the women at Lugner’s side were given animal nicknames, but it only started with marriage number four. His then wife, Christina Haidinger, was given the name “Mausi”. “Mausi” Lugner later enjoyed success in the RTL jungle camp. After separating from “Mausi”, Bettina “Hasi” Kofler entered Lugner’s life. In 2009, Nina “Bambi” Bruckner was at the building contractor’s side for a while.

Women were given nicknames

The Lugner zoo also included “Zebra”, “Hummingbird”, “Goldfish” and “Spatzi”. The building contractor himself also had a nickname, “Mörtel”, which was given to him by the tabloid journalist Michael Jeannée. Jeannée originally called him “Zuwedrucka” because Lugner “always stood up for celebrities, i.e. zuwedruckt”.

Lugner and the celebrities: a long story. The property developer became famous, among other things, for his appearances at the Vienna Opera Ball, to which he usually invited illustrious guests. Kim Kardashian accompanied Lugner there, as did Gina Lollobridgida, Andie MacDowell, Tatjana Gsell, Pamela Anderson and Paris Hilton.

Lugner’s appearances at the Opera Ball had been a tradition for more than 30 years. He paid the high-profile guests a handsome salary so that they could appear on his arm.
