A documentary takes a personal look behind the scenes of Bruce Springsteen’s tour – and reveals a difficult diagnosis for his wife Patti Scialfa.
US musician Bruce Springsteen has no plans to hang up his guitar any time soon. “I want to keep rocking until the wheels fall off,” said the 74-year-old late Sunday evening (local time) at the 49th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). There, the documentary “Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band” directed by Thom Zimny celebrated its world premiere in front of an enthusiastic audience.
“Road Diary” shows footage from Springsteen’s current world tour, gives an intimate look behind the scenes and deals with topics such as mortality. In Toronto, Springsteen expressed his gratitude for his life and his career: “If I left tomorrow, that would be fine,” he said to loud applause. “What a damn ride.”
Springsteen’s wife and E Street bandmate Patti Scialfa revealed in the documentary that she was diagnosed with a form of blood cancer in 2018. “It affects my immune system, so I have to be careful,” she said in the film. Every now and then she comes to a show and can sing a few songs. “It’s a joy. It’s the new normal for me, and I’m OK with that,” explained Scialfa, who was not present at the premiere in Toronto.
