Isabella Rossellini has been an internationally successful film star since 1979. At the age of 72, the actress is receiving a special honor from Europe’s film world.
The European Film Academy is honoring actress Isabella Rossellini for her services to the global influence of European cinema. The 72-year-old will receive the European Achievement in World Cinema Award towards the end of the year, the academy announced in Berlin.
The Academy recognized Rossellini’s “outstanding work” since 1979, including in films such as “Blue Velvet,” “Fearless” and “Joy.” The award states: “She has worked with many different directors, including Robert Zemeckis, David O. Russell, David Lynch, Robert Wilson, Taylor Hackford, Marjane Satrapi and Guy Maddin.” She is also a successful television actress and filmmaker who is very interested in animals and wildlife conservation.
Preserving a cinematic heritage
Isabella Rossellini’s interests went further, however, they “include the preservation of her family’s extraordinary cinematic heritage, including the films of her father Roberto Rossellini, about whom she has written, and the films starring her mother Ingrid Bergman”.
The award is planned for early December at the European Film Awards ceremony in Lucerne, Switzerland. Before Rossellini, the award has recently been given to Danish director Susanne Bier (“After the Wedding”) and British actor Ralph Fiennes (“Schindler’s List”).
The European Film Academy, founded in 1989 and based in Berlin, has set itself the task of networking its 5,000 members, supporting, honoring and promoting them and their work. Its aim is to impart knowledge and inspire viewers of all ages to enjoy European cinema. An important concern of the organization is the preservation of European film heritage and the involvement of young audiences.
