“You don’t have the right body”: Timothée Chalamet had problems getting roles early in his career because of his weight.
Timothée Chalamet (28) spoke in (51) about his difficult start in Hollywood. At that time, he was repeatedly rejected because of his slight physique. “When I auditioned for ‘The Maze Runner’ or ‘Divergent,’ the feedback was always, ‘Oh, you don’t have the right body,'” Chalamet recalled.
“I had an agent call me and say, ‘You need to gain weight,'” he continued. Instead of changing to get roles in blockbusters, he found his home in “very personal films” like “Call Me by Your Name” (2017), “Lady Bird” (2017) or “Beautiful Boy” (2018 ) discovered. “They were smaller budget films, but very – I don’t know how else to put it – likeable films […] This is where I found my rhythm, my confidence, my flow, whatever you want to call it.”
Connection to Bob Dylan
Timothée Chalamet has now fully arrived in Hollywood and plays leading roles in blockbusters such as “Wonka” (2023) and “Dune: Part Two” (2024). From February 27, 2025 he can be seen as Bob Dylan (83) in his biopic “Like A Complete Unknown”. Through the experience at the beginning of his career, Chalamet feels connected to the legendary singer-songwriter, he said in the interview.
“I’ve been through a lot that makes me identify with Bob Dylan’s journey,” Chalamet said. Dylan always dreamed of a life as a rock’n’roll star, just as he dreamed of being a great actor. What the above-mentioned “personal films” were for him, Dylan found in folk music after rock’n’roll didn’t work out.
