The phrase “ladies and gentlemen” in the greeting at the start of the daily news program at 8 p.m. will be abolished. The sentence “Good evening, ladies and gentlemen, I welcome you to the Tagesschau” was last uttered on November 20th, a spokesman for NDR told dpa. The new greeting has been spoken since November 21st. It reads “Good evening, I welcome you to the Tagesschau.”
The “Tagesschau” is increasingly orienting its speaker texts towards the spoken word instead of formal written language, according to an official statement from the broadcaster. This also applies to the greeting. The change is based, among other things, on a qualitative audience survey and “corresponds to the desire for an authentic and accessible approach”.
The NDR spokesman could not say how long the “ladies and gentlemen” was part of the greeting. In a Tagesschau recording from 1960, the then spokesman Karl-Heinz Köpcke, also known as “Mr. Tagesschau”, simply said “Good evening”.
