Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan do not want to spend Christmas in Great Britain. They rejected a family invitation to create their own traditions.
While the British royals made the traditional pilgrimage to St. Mary Magdalene Church in Norfolk on December 25th, Duchess Meghan and Prince Harry and their children Archie and Lilibet opted for a contemplative Christmas in their adopted home of Montecito, California. As usual, Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland, was also said to have been part of the small celebration.
According to royal expert Ingrid Seward, who spoke to the British Mirror, King Charles III would have. loved seeing his grandchildren at Christmas. However, there was no official invitation – possibly due to tensions within the family. Harry and Meghan have not spent Christmas with the royal family at Sandringham since 2018, the year of their wedding.
Nevertheless, the Sussexes received an invitation from Great Britain: Harry’s uncle, Charles Spencer, invited them to the Althorp estate in Northamptonshire. But Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan refused.
“It is important to Duchess Meghan that her children can develop their own family traditions,” explained the expert Seward. She especially wants to make American holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas unforgettable for Archie and Lilibet. Meghan told Marie Claire magazine about the Sussexes’ Christmas: “Like any other family, you spend time enjoying a great meal and then what do you do? You play games, all the same stuff, someone brings a guitar with – fun.”
Prince Harry and the brother of his late mother Diana maintain a close relationship despite the falling out with the British royal family. Harry and Meghan have visited Althorp several times in recent years, and Charles Spencer attended his nephew’s tenth anniversary celebration of the Invictus Games in London on May 8.

Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan want to keep to themselves at Christmas
Christmas in Montecito was quiet and private. Duchess Meghan probably helped herself to decorate the house for the holidays – a departure from the custom of hiring professional decorators in the affluent neighborhood. She is also said to have made a gingerbread house, as is tradition in the USA.
Meanwhile, King Charles and Queen Camilla appeared in Norfolk for the traditional Christmas service. They were accompanied by Prince William, Princess Kate and their three children as well as other members of the royal family. As every year, the royals strolled along the waiting crowd, shaking hands and exchanging friendly words – a familiar sight that defined the festive mood in Great Britain.
