In a new interview about her book “Brooke Shields Is Not Allowed To Get Old,” the actress talks about the liberating aspect of aging.
The closer she gets to her 60th birthday, the more confident Brooke Shields becomes. The 59-year-old actress spoke to the about the benefits of aging.
She celebrates her 60th birthday on May 31st, but the cult star from “The Blue Lagoon” doesn’t let that intimidate her. On the contrary: “The more I am expected to be invisible, to make no demands, or to fade away so that I can be frozen in time as a certain (read: younger) version of Brooke Shields, the more I intend to stand tall to stand and take up space as the woman I am now,” she writes in her new book, “Brooke Shields Is Not Allowed To Get Old: Thoughts on Aging as a Woman.” to Become: Thoughts on Aging as a Woman), which will be published on January 14th. she already posted the book cover.
She spoke to Us Weekly about the book and proudly shared how her confidence and joy grew with her age – despite adverse conditions: “I began to notice that external perceptions didn’t seem to match my internal sense of self. My industry has me was no longer received with the same enthusiasm that I had expected. The mood from casting agents and producers, but also from my fans, was more: We should stop time… maybe even reverse it.”
“I was overlooked”
Shields writes that she was “overlooked at the exact moment I felt like I was in my prime.” “Yes, [das Altern] has the disadvantages, but we’re not chasing anything anymore,” she said in the interview. “We have to have babies at that age, we have to get married at that age, we have to finish college. There are so many decades where we’re just trying to get to the next level.” That’s over now.
Once that pressure eases, older women are better able to be themselves: “We can push boundaries as we move through the world without the watchful eyes of, well, everyone.”
“I don’t give a damn if someone doesn’t like me anymore”
The actress ventured into something new and founded Commence Haircare, a hair care brand for women over 40. “I see myself at Commence now, and I never aspired to be in a position like this. I’m thinking about the Zoom I took this morning one of our investors, and how clear I was; and the fact that I was in therapy an hour before,” she says openly. And how she “controls” her two adult daughters or “helps” her husband Chris Henchy (60) through something.
“And you just see all these different spokes of a woman’s wheel, you know?” she continues. “That makes me proud, then I don’t give a damn if someone doesn’t like me anymore. I mean, yeah, you get a little pang, but I sit back and think: I don’t even know if I respect you, so Why should I worry so much about whether you like me?”
