What is the fascination with Pablo Escobar’s houses
More than three decades after the death of Pablo Escobar, the figure of the Colombian drug trafficker remains a topic of interest thanks to the documentaries, films and series that portrayed his life. It led to many foreign tourists visiting Colombia to know some of their properties, turning them into tourist attractions not only in Colombia, but also in other countries.
After his death, Escobar’s properties were distributed among which the Colombian State intervened and those delivered by their relatives to avoid reprisals. However, some of these properties were transformed into tourist attractions that attract visitors from all over the world.
Hacienda Naples
One of the best known places is the Naples farm, which after being intervened by the State, was transformed into a theme park with multiple aquatic and mechanical attractions. The house where Escobar held its parties was demolished, but the park has a small museum that remembers the violence and negative aspects caused by the criminal. The Naples Treasury, located in Puerto Triunfo, Antioquia, had an airstrip, Olympic swimming pools, 27 artificial lakes and a zoo with more than 1,500 animals brought from different parts of the world.
La Manuela Finca
Another remarkable property is the La Manuela estate, located in Peñol, one of the most tourist areas of Antioquia. Appointed in honor of Escobar’s youngest daughter, this eight -hectare farm was abandoned before ending due to the attacks of her enemies. Although it is in ruins, tourists pay boatmen to visit this place.
Monaco building
The Monaco building, which served as the base of the Medellín cartel and shelter for Escobar’s family, was demolished in 2019 by decision of the then mayor of Medellín, Federico Gutiérrez. Instead, there is the inflection commemorative park, which pays tribute to the victims of the Medellín cartel.
House in Tulum
Out of Colombia, Escobar also acquired properties, such as a mansion in Tulum, Mexico. This land, abandoned for years, was sold by the Mexican authorities and transformed into Casa Malca, a hotel complex that opened its doors in 2015. The new owner, Lio Malca, made significant changes to eliminate any reference to Escobar and highlight the New York art of the 90s.
