“I definitely don’t intend to stop in the near future,” clarifies Billy Idol in an interview and reports back with new music.
Billy Idol (69) celebrates his big comeback. After eleven years, the British rock and punal ends finally released a studio album again on April 25th. “Dream Into IT” is the name of the new work where fans can look forward to nine songs. Since “Kings & Queens of the Underground” (2014), Idol had released new music on two EPS, but a complete album was long in coming. So why does a new studio work come right now? The EPS would have made it possible for him to share new music faster, but at some point he noticed: “For an EP, I have to do as much doctorate as for an album – only an EP hardly takes any serious one,” he explains in an interview with the news agency Spot on News.
The order of the songs on his new album has a very special meaning for Billy Idol. “Usually you put the strongest songs on the album – often the second track is even the first single,” says the musician. But this time everything is different: the tracks on “Dream into it” deliberately reflect the course of his life – from the early years to the present. He was also inspired by the upcoming documentary “Billy Idol Should Be Dead”, which once again confronted him intensively with his own past.
Billy Idol sings with Avril Lavigne
On the album, Billy Idol can not only be heard alone, but also with three other punk icons: Avril Lavigne (40), Joan Jett (66) and Alison Mosshart (46). There are “more great singers than ever before,” enthuses Idol. He is particularly enthusiastic about pop-punk singer Lavigne: “In my opinion, what she did with the song ’77’ did it three times better.”
Joan Jett accompanies him on the track “Wildside”. “We both have a wild side that is difficult to tame,” explains Idol. He met the singer in Los Angeles in 1978. Together they had already played shows, and drummer Thommy Price also combine the two. “So we have been very personable for a long time,” Idol sums up. With The-Kills singer Alison Mosshart, he also recovered his song “John Wayne” for “Dream Into IT”. The musician raves about her: “She has one of the most impressive voices in Rock’n’roll – she could easily sing the song alone, she doesn’t need me at all.” He adds: “Actually, I don’t even know why I’m there. She’s just great.”
This is how tours have changed for him
With the new songs in their luggage, Idol will go on tour in a few days. In this country, the music legend gives four concerts in summer. German fans would have “supported him from day one,” says Idol about his connection to Germany. Even during his generation X times, he had a lot of support from you. Now you can experience it live in Northeim, Bonn and Wiesbaden. On June 27, the singer also stops for a show on the Königsplatz in Munich. Idol is enthusiastic about the concert.
The 69-year-old will be on the road for around five months as part of the “It’s a nice day to … tour again!” In contrast to earlier, however, he is working differently today. “In the past, when you were still young, you could go full throttle all day. And even if you reach your limits, you just continued – nothing could stop you,” recalls Idol. “Today, however, when you run against a wall, it’s over.” Nevertheless, he could continue to give everything by giving up and focusing his energy in a targeted manner.
“For me it was my dream”
In 2025, the rock musician could also be included in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. The only thought of becoming part of an institution belongs to legends like Eddie Cochran, Buddy Holly, Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry or Little Richard, was “crazy” for him. However, it is not yet clear who will actually get a place in the Hall of Fame. “But if we can do it, Steve Stevens will also be recorded with me,” emphasizes Idol about his long -time guitarist.
Idol seems to have achieved just about everything in his career. Are there any other goals anyway? For him it is “an incredible gift to get the chance to do what you love. Most people finally spend a large part of their day with work that they mainly do because of the money. Maybe they like their job, but often it was not their first choice. For me, this was always my dream.” And that is far from over for Idol: “I definitely don’t intend to stop in the near future,” he clarifies.
