Spitzbergen is a place of longing for Mette-Marit from Norway: Now she celebrated the 100th anniversary of the archipelago as part of Norway.
Members of the Norwegian royal family around King Harald V (88) and Queen Sonja (87) celebrated a special occasion on Wednesday: the 100th anniversary of the so-called Spitzbergen Act, which officially made the Arctic archipelago in 1925. And Crown Prince Haakon (51) and Crown Princess Mette-Marit (51) also accepted the invitation of the Norwegian Ministry of Justice and Security for the Svalbard Symposium in the Gamle Logen in Oslo.
The two came hand in hand to the event, Haakon in the dark blue suit and Mette-Marit in a loose, white pants and a dark blue blouse. The Norwegian crown princess has a special affection for Spitzbergen, located between the Norwegian mainland and the North Pole.
Location for crown princess Mette-Marit
In 2008 the crown prince spent a long vacation with his children and lived in a former fishing hut in Fredheim for three weeks. This experience apparently left a lasting impression on the family. At that time, Mette-Marit is even said to have expressed the desire to move to Spitzbergen permanently. That when visiting the archipelago. According to the Norwegian news page “Se OG Hør”, the crown princess is said to have eagerly listened to various lectures at today’s event and even protested when it was time to leave the event.
Spitzbergen also seems to be a heart for the rest of the royal family: in 2018 King Harald and Queen Sonja invited her children and grandchildren to go there for a family vacation together. In June, according to “Se OG Hør”, the royal couple will once more travel to the Norwegian archipelago in the Arctic. It is currently not known whether a further visit to Haakon and Mette-Marit will soon be due.
