In 1991 he returned as a private secretary

Low describes in detail how frustrated Airy was about the increasing gap between the respective employees of Charles and Diana when the tensions in their marriage increased. A contemporary described him as “not suitable at all” and “completely from another planet”. “He was very charming, very elegant, very household cavalry. But he was very naive when it comes to how the world works out there.”

Airy had the role as an important confidante of the prince couple for almost a year. His resignation was announced in May 1991.
