A former private secretary of Charles and Diana died. He worked for the couple when he was already fighting problems.
He should have noticed a lot behind the palace walls: Major General Sir Christopher Airy was the private secretary of Princess Diana (1961-1997) and King Charles (76) for almost a year – at a time when her marriage was already in the crisis. , the former palace employee died on April 7 at the age of 91.
From the military to the palace
Airy initially had a career in the British army. He joined the military in 1954 and stood up steadily until he became Major General of HouseHold Division and General Officer Commanding of the London District in 1986. After leaving the military in 1989, Airy was appointed Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order after receiving the Order of the British Empire.
As the commander of the HouseHold Division, he had become a familiar face to the British royal family. The appointment of Sir Christopher as Charles’ private secretary, at that time still Prince of Wales, and Princess Diana was announced at the end of 1989. In mid -1990 he started his new position. But Sir Christopher probably had to find out very quickly that the role did not meet his expectations.
In 1991 he returned as a private secretary
A court who was cited in the 2022 book “Courtiere: The Hidden Power Behind the Crown” by Valentine Low, said that the “fundamental” problem was that Airy “did not fit in”. Low describes in detail how frustrated Airy was about the increasing gap between the respective employees of Charles and Diana when the tensions in their marriage increased. A contemporary described him as “not suitable at all” and “completely from another planet”. “He was very charming, very elegant, very household cavalry. But he was very naive when it comes to how the world works out there.”
For example, he was not set to Charles’ growing charity at all. Airy had trouble to “understand the differences between the various organizations of the prince. He must have been unhappy. We all talked about abbreviations, all of this charitable, voluntary and state stuff, and Christopher was completely lost.”
Airy had the role as an important confidante of the prince couple for almost a year. His resignation was announced in May 1991.
The following year, Charles and Diana announced their separation. The divorce followed in 1996. Just a year later, the mother of Prince William (42) and Prince Harry (40) died in a car accident in Paris.
