Solid shower gel instead of liquid: This is why the cosmetics trend is booming

The topic of sustainability is becoming more and more important – also in the cosmetics industry: After hair soap and solid shampoo have already conquered the market, the shower gel is finally catching up. Whereby (in the real sense) it is no longer a liquid gel.

Conventional soaps consist of animal or vegetable fats (for example coconut oil or olive oil) and alkaline solutions – in other words, a lye with which they are cooked. A solid shower gel, on the other hand, may look like a bar of soap, but is to be understood differently: It is a classic shower gel from which the water has been removed. In other words, the nourishing ingredients are still the same. With the difference that the solid form is much more productive: Depending on the consumption, a solid shower gel of 100 grams should replace two to three bottles of 250 milliliters. And those are not all advantages that have even convinced the consumer magazine Öko-Test.

Advantages: These reasons speak in favor of solid shower gel

In addition to the productivity, the ecological balance also plays an important role: because different from the classic products without plastic – instead it is packed in small cardboard boxes. In addition, most brands (regardless of whether they are conventional or certified organic) dispense with problematic and critical ingredients: silicones and paraffins, preservatives, PEG compounds and synthetic polymers. This means that people and the environment benefit equally when you switch to solid shower gel.

Solid shower gel in the eco test: the results

Öko-Test has tested a total of 18 different products, including eleven natural cosmetic products – ten of which received the top rating (read “very good”), for example , and . But solid shower gel from conventional manufacturers was also able to convince the testers: five out of seven products also scored “very good”. Including brands such as Foamie, of which there are currently three different types: , Coconut and cocoa butter as well .

Only one product actually failed: Maxi Minz shower chunks, a solid shower gel from a conventional manufacturer. Too many synthetic ingredients were found in it that Öko-Test classifies as critical.

How to use solid shower gel correctly

The application works no differently here than with a classic body soap: Take this into your hand, rub it between your wet fingers (until it starts to foam) and distribute the foam on the skin. Alternatively, you can slide the shower boulder directly over the wet body in circular movements and thus distribute the foam evenly. Then rinse off the shower gel as usual.

Store solid shower gel correctly

So that the sturdy piece of shower gel does not break over time, it is advantageous to store the product properly – for example in an airy one made of sisal that you hang on a hook in the bathroom (near the shower). This means it can be stored in a dry place without the risk of slowly softening. Alternatively, you can use an ordinary soap dish with small holes in the bottom so that the water drains off better.
