The nationwide seven-day incidence has again increased significantly. The RKI gave the value as 130.2 on Thursday morning. The day before, the value was 118.0. At the same time, the fear of overburdening hospitals is growing.
The nationwide seven-day incidence of new corona infections has increased significantly. As the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) announced early Thursday morning, citing data from the health authorities, the value increased to 130.2. The day before it was 118.0, a week ago it was 85.6. The value indicates the number of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days.
According to the latest information from the RKI, 28,037 new coronavirus infections and 126 new deaths related to the virus were recorded within 24 hours. The total number of registered cases of infection in Germany since the beginning of the pandemic has grown to 4,534,452, the total number of recorded deaths in connection with a corona infection to 95,485. The number of people recovered from illness caused by the coronavirus was reported by the RKI to be around 4.247 million.
The seven-day incidence has been rising continuously for two weeks. Last Friday, the value had exceeded the 100 mark for the first time since May.
Concern about overloading the intensive care units is growing again
In view of the increasing number of corona infections, concerns about overburdening the hospitals are growing again. The German Hospital Society sees a “critical situation of the pandemic”. According to the World Medical Association, the nursing staff in the intensive care units and the doctors have long been working on the attack. Pediatricians hope that Covid-19 vaccinations for children under twelve will soon be possible in Germany. The European Medicines Agency EMA announced on Wednesday that it would decide before Christmas if possible whether it would recommend corona vaccinations for children between the ages of five and eleven.
The chairman of the World Medical Association, Frank Ulrich Montgomery, told the “Augsburger Allgemeine” (Thursday) that anyone who does not get vaccinated now, although he could do it, is risking his life and that of those around him. “We must do everything in our power to increase vaccination rates,” he warned. “If the population has a high level of vaccination, there are many more mild courses – they don’t have to go to hospital, but many people who have not been vaccinated are still seriously ill.” Many nurses and doctors have given up work in the intensive care unit – also because they are tired of working themselves out for the unreasonableness of vaccine opponents.
“We are in a critical pandemic situation”
The managing director of the German Hospital Association, Gerald Gaß, told the editorial network Germany (RND / Thursday): “We are in a critical situation of the pandemic.” The number of patients treated with a Covid infection in hospital has increased significantly within a week. “If this development continues, we will have 3,000 patients in intensive care again in two weeks,” warned Gaß. “Even if the hospitals can do this, it will not be able to run without restricting normal operations,” said the head of the association. Then the doctors in the clinics would have to postpone planned, less urgent treatments again.
At the height of the pandemic in January 2021, more than 5700 corona sufferers received intensive care. According to figures from the intensive care registry, there are currently almost 1,800 people in the intensive care unit and almost 4,300 patients in the normal ward.
