In the USA, unvaccinated people in particular die from Covid-19. Sometimes dramatic scenes take place in the hospitals, reports a doctor – because many patients initially refused the vaccination.
In the USA, a new buzzword is making the rounds in the Corona crisis: the “Pandemic of the unvaccinated”. That is how President Joe Biden described the situation in the United States last week. The head of the US health authority CDC, Rochelle Walensky, also used this term. Almost all of the people who are currently infected and dying are unvaccinated, Biden said.
Brytney Cobia, a doctor from the state of Alabama, learns what that looks like almost every day. She works in a hospital and treats particularly serious Covid-19 cases there. Her experience, which she shared in a Facebook post, confirms the statements of Biden and other responsible persons – and at the same time is an urgent call to get vaccinated.
Dramatic scenes take place on her ward, especially when Covid 19 patients have to be connected to a ventilator. “One of the last things they do before being intubated is to ask me for a vaccination”reports Cobia. But then the doctor can do little for the sick: “I hold her hand and tell them I’m sorry but it’s too late for that.”
Unvaccinated people in particular die of Covid-19
Many of these people are dying, Cobia told the local media “Al.com” – and often they are middle-aged or young people. Vaccinated infected people, on the other hand, could be discharged quickly and would recover completely, even if they had to be hospitalized.
Unfortunately, many of the patients can no longer be helped, but Brytney Cobia at least tries to convince the relatives of the vaccination. “I hug family members and tell them that if they get vaccinated and encourage others to do so, they do the deceased the greatest honor”the doctor writes on Facebook. Many would believe false reports about the vaccination or would have underestimated Covid-19 as a disease. “They wish they could go back. But that doesn’t work.”
New infections in the USA are rising sharply again
“It’s not too late, but it might one day”, Cobia warns with urgent words. Admittedly, everyone makes their own decision as to whether or not they want to be vaccinated – but seeing those who refuse to be vaccinated die is still a concern for them. “They are still people who think they made the best decision with the information that was available to them”said Cobia “Al.com”. “And then you see their fear and regret. Even if I walk into the room and think, ‘This is your own fault,’ when I go back out I see a person who is really suffering.”
Mainly due to the particularly contagious Delta variant, the number of new infections in the USA is increasing again sharply. According to the CDC, the variant is responsible for more than 80 percent of infections. However, the number of deaths with a confirmed corona infection remains relatively stable. So far, 56.3 percent of the US population have received at least one vaccine dose, 48.8 percent are considered fully vaccinated.
