Vitamin D is a special vitamin because it can form the body using sunlight itself. Few foods also contain it. You should know these facts.
Vitamin D plays an important role in the body: it is indispensable for the immune system and healthy bones. Most of the required vitamin D forms the body itself-using the UVB rays of the sunlight. Vitamin D can also be absorbed through food, if only a little. However, the need for vitamin D cannot be covered by food alone.
If the body’s production comes to a standstill, for example in the winter months or in bedridden patients, vitamin D can be supplied via preparations. Vitamin D preparations can be useful for a medically diagnosed deficiency. Your use without medical advice is controversial, also because improper use can be overdosed with vitamin D. Possible consequences are nausea, kidney problems and an excessive calcium level in the blood.
Take vitamin D or not?
It derived an estimated value for daily supply. It applies to people who do not form vitamin D – be it because they are chronically ill or are only fully dressed outdoors. The recommended supply is 20 micrograms (800 IE) vitamin D a day. But there are also voices that speak for a higher dosage. The maximum upper limit sees it at 4000 IE, i.e. 100 micrograms.
In our photo gallery you will learn more surprising facts about the sun vitamin. Did you know, for example, that the solar intensity in the Alps is sufficient all year round to form vitamin D? Or that they form more vitamin D when lying down than standing?
