The 41-year-old said on Saturday that he wanted to protect Chelsea’s “history and heritage”. Comprised of former players, British entrepreneurs and supporters, the consortium aims above all to represent those who care about the club.
“Chelsea has been such an important part of my life for 22 years,” Terry wrote on Twitter. “I want the club’s history and legacy to be protected as we enter a new era with like-minded people who share the same long-term vision of building the best football club in the world.” The former England team defender said he met with representatives of “The True Blues” and now knows what they are up to. “They are a group of lifelong Chelsea fans and season ticket holders.”
The consortium aims to support preferred bidders for the club while increasing connection with fans and engagement with the board. The targeted ten percent should be worth around 250 million pounds (approx. 298 million euros).
Chelsea are up for sale after Russian owner Roman Abramovich was hit with tough sanctions by the British government over the Russian invasion of Ukraine. So far there have been several offers to buy the London club, including British real estate developer Nick Candy, the Ricketts family (owners of the Chicago Cubs) and ex-British Airways boss Martin Broughton together with World Athletics Federation President Sebastian Coe .
Terry won five league titles with Chelsea, five FA Cups, the 2012 Champions League and the 2013 Europa League. Between 1998 and 2017 he made 717 appearances for the “Blues”.
