Curtain up in the renovated city theater of Grein

Curtain up in the renovated city theater of Grein

Founded in 1791, it is the oldest surviving community theater in Austria and part of the European Route of Historical Theaters with a lively theater tradition.

The general renovation of the old town hall is now complete. It was renovated according to the latest standards of monument preservation. On the one hand they have understood how to preserve the old charm of the house, on the other hand the infrastructure has been adapted to the requirements of the 21st century.

Renovated with care

Historical and contemporary elements have been carefully considered. A contemporary extension with a staircase and elevator was added. Attracted by the striking golden lettering “Stadttheater Grein”, you reach the new foyer with the attached buffet through the light-flooded extension, a place that invites you to linger before and after the performances and of course during the breaks.

On the first floor of the building you enter the renovated theater hall. The use of state-of-the-art technology makes it possible to create different lighting moods, so it is now also possible to take visitors into an atmosphere that is in no way inferior to a theater experience in 1791. The house not only offers a lively theater business, it can also be visited as a museum in the season from May to September. Next to the theatre, the small, fine city museum was redesigned and newly furnished on the first floor. On the one hand, it illuminates the eventful history of the town of Grein, on the other hand, it gives an insight into the theater history of the house, from its beginnings to the present day.

Art is cheerful

According to the slogan written above the entrance to the theater – “Life is serious, art is cheerful” – the renovated house should be a place to linger and immerse yourself in the fascinating world of theatre.

Grand opening today

Today from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., the renovated Old Town Hall and the Grein City Theater can be visited for the first time with free admission. The Grein town band will play, and small refreshments will be offered.
