CCS charging system is to become a global standard

The muddle surrounding the charging infrastructure is still terrifying to remember. When the first e-models like BMW i3, Tesla Model S, Renault Zoe, Nissan Leaf came onto the market around 2012, there was confusion about the charging plugs. The French preferred CHAdeMO, while the Germans preferred Type 2 – and later the direct current extension, the CCS (Combined Charging System). The older E models could also be charged with CEE5 plugs.

In the meantime, the type 2 or the direct current model CCS has prevailed. With the latter, 350 kW or more can also be charged.

The German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) and the Charging Interface Initiative (CharIN), an international association of vehicle manufacturers, energy suppliers and OEM manufacturers, have now announced their commitment to CCS becoming the global charging standard. Both therefore want to develop a common position on the further development of charging technology and infrastructure.
