Lack of staff in kindergartens: SPÖ has three demands

The salary scheme for elementary teachers in Upper Austria must be raised to the level of Lower Austria, says SP boss Michael Lindner. In some salary levels, the difference is between 400 and 1000 euros gross.

In addition, the working conditions should be improved – in particular by reducing the size of the groups. In the past ten years, the average group size in Upper Austria’s kindergartens has increased from 16.3 children to 17.9. That frustrates employees, says Lindner. If the working conditions were to be improved, there would be more female elementary teachers. Lindner calls for a reversal of the regulation introduced at the end of 2017 by the responsible LH deputy Christine Haberlander (VP), according to which kindergarten groups no longer have to report exceedances to the state of up to a group size of 25 children, as well as a reversal of the fees for afternoon care.

Last but not least, more educational work must be made possible in kindergartens and crèches, demanded Doris Margreiter, SP social spokeswoman and managing director of Kinderfreunde OÖ.

The responsible LH deputy Haberlander usually puts the employees off by referring to ongoing negotiations with the federal government, say the two SP politicians. Upper Austria does not have to wait for the federal government for the improvements mentioned. “We expect active action from the state,” says Lindner. The improvements should be financed from federal and state funds. The “financially heavily burdened communities” should not be further burdened, says Lindner.

Haberlander refers to “Dialogue Tour”

In response to the SP press conference, Haberlander refers to her dialogue tour to improve the situation in child education and care. “It aims to obtain opinions and approaches in order to achieve improvements in this area together with all partners.” everything will be better”. She is concerned with improvements “that we want to achieve together. We owe that to our children.”
