Warm to hot in midsummer and not always only sun – this is how the forecast for the weather next week in Austria can be summarized. According to the Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG), there is also a high risk of thunderstorms. This is especially true for Monday evening and then again on Friday from the west.
At the Monday high air pressure and subtropical warm air masses bring a lot of sunshine and summer temperatures. While in most parts of the country the sun shines most of the time from a largely cloudless sky, some cumulus clouds form over the Alpine peaks during the course of the day. The wind usually blows weakly, only moderately on the eastern edge of the Alps, temporarily even briskly, from directions around the southeast. In the morning, the temperature is between 14 degrees in higher Alpine valleys and 22 degrees in downtown Vienna, by the afternoon maximum values between 26 degrees in the west and up to 35 degrees in the east are expected. In Upper Austria, peak values of 34 degrees are expected.
Gusts, heavy rain and hail
In Upper Austria, the ZAMG expects “partly very strong thunderstorms” coming from Bavaria, which will come up from the west in the evening or in the first half of the night. “The storm and hail potential is quite high.” ZAMG issued a storm and thunderstorm warning from 7 p.m. to midnight. Wind peaks can reach up to 90 km/h throughout Upper Austria and even 100 km/h, especially in the central area. Hail and heavy rain are also possible. “Trees can break, roof tiles can come loose, scaffolding can fall over,” says the weather warning. Small-scale flooding and hail damage is also to be expected.

Thunderstorm danger remains
With a southwesterly current arrive at Tuesday unstable air masses from south-west Europe to Austria. With these, cumulus clouds, rain showers and thunderstorms are already forming in the morning. The risk of thunderstorms generally remains high in the afternoon. However, the focus of precipitation shifted to the southern side of the Alps. In the north and east, moderate to brisk westerly winds will temporarily pick up during the morning hours. Apart from that, however, moderate south-easterly winds blow at the edge of the Alps. 15 to 23 degrees are expected in the morning and 25 to 33 degrees during the day. A maximum of 30 degrees is forecast for Upper Austria.

Increasingly unstable from Wednesday
For the western half of Austria, the midweek Unstable weather, with changing and sometimes heavily swelling clouds, some rain showers and thunderstorms are to be expected. To the east and south-east the sun shines much more frequently, regionally also almost without interruption. In the course of the day, only individual showers and thunderstorm cells are expected to form, but these can be violent at certain points. Apart from thunderstorm gusts, it is rather weak windy, only in the east does the wind blow from the southeast to the south at times moderately to briskly. The morning temperatures are between 15 and 23. The maximum daily temperatures vary greatly, between 23 and 36 degrees from west to east. It stays a bit cooler in Upper Austria, where the temperatures are expected to reach a maximum of 28 degrees.
At the Thursday From today’s perspective, mostly friendly, often sunny midsummer weather will prevail in large parts of Austria, with some areas getting really hot again. Large cumulus clouds can form everywhere over the mountains, but overall the chance of showers and thunderstorms should decrease significantly compared to the previous days. The wind will be weak to moderate from mixed directions. According to the forecast, the early temperatures are between 14 and 23 degrees, maximum daily temperatures are usually between 27 and 33 degrees, in Upper Austria up to 31 degrees.

Fault zone approaching on Friday
Approaching from the west Friday however, there is a prominent fault zone. According to ZAMG, it is not yet possible to estimate exactly how far this will progress eastwards over the course of the day. Especially from Vorarlberg to Upper Austria, unstable weather with showers and some thunderstorms is expected and the temperatures are falling. In the east and south-east it will probably remain sunny and hot for a long time before thunderstorm activity may also start in the evening. In addition, in the run-up to the disturbance, regionally moderate or even brisk southeast to south winds will blow, which will then be replaced by westerly winds. Early temperatures are expected between 15 to 22. The maximum daily temperatures vary from region to region, from west to east around 22 to 35 degrees, but it can also get hotter locally.
Video: “There used to be two to four hot days a year in the Linz area. That has increased significantly and will continue to increase due to climate change. That goes up to 30 hot days a year,” says weather forecaster Klaus Reingruber Blue Sky weather analysis in Attnang-Puchheim.
