Wien Energie’s electricity business will be examined by an investigative commission that is to start before Christmas, the Viennese FPÖ and ÖVP assured today in a cozy togetherness. Support comes from the Greens, although votes from Blues and Blacks would be enough to use the control tool. Both parties admitted that it was somewhat toothless, for example in the definition of the scope of the investigation or in the obligation to testify.
The Greens, who announced their approval of the U-Commission today after the FPÖ and ÖVP press conference, spoke out in favor of expanding the rules for an investigative commission before it was set up. FPÖ and ÖVP also hope to win the Neos for the commission, ÖVP state party chairman Karl Mahrer emphasized that he also spoke to the Neos before today’s press conference.
Nepp: “Ludwig is lying”
The Viennese FPÖ leader Dominik Nepp said today that Mayor Michael Ludwig (SPÖ) would “lie” in the case of Wien Energie. “Mayor Ludwig lies to the public every day. His gamble and cover-up of 1.4 billion euros will be clarified by our ad on the one hand, and through the U-Commission announced today, we will also show Mayor Ludwig’s political responsibility,” he said.
In any case, Mahrer said today that quality comes before speed in the commission, and the Greens also see the need for preliminary work. “We would have liked to have used September to change the rules of the game so that the commission of inquiry can also examine Wien Energie’s specific transactions,” said party chairman Peter Kraus. Because currently only very limited questions can be asked about the business of Wien Energie.
