Snow comes at night: weather warning for parts of Upper Austria

Frau Holle sends a white greeting to Upper Austria on Tuesday night. Those who are at home at higher altitudes have a good chance of finding an untouched winter landscape on their doorstep on Tuesday morning. The Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG) predicts up to ten centimeters of fresh snow in northern Upper Austria and in parts of the Salzkammergut. The map shows the affected regions (orange means up to ten centimeters of fresh snow, green means up to five centimeters):

Snowdrifts possible

The ZAMG has therefore issued a yellow snow warning for the Upper Mühlviertel and the Sauwald. “In connection with an increasing westerly wind, there may be local snowdrifts and sometimes difficult driving conditions in the exposed, higher road sections,” warn the experts. Caution is therefore required, especially in the early morning traffic on Tuesday. Delays must be expected. Higher settlements such as Kirchschlag near Linz are also affected.

Occasional snowfall in the lowlands

What is the prognosis in detail? While it will remain largely dry on Monday afternoon, rain and snowfall will spread from the southwest in the evening hours. The snow line drops noticeably and is between 400 and 600 meters. Occasionally, snowflakes can also get lost in the lowlands, according to the meteorologists. But they won’t stay put.

Onset of winter at the weekend?

The precipitation will soon subside in the morning hours of Tuesday. Soon in the morning dry weather sets in and the sun often comes through again in the mountains. Everywhere else the sun is fighting against high fog-like clouds. The temperatures in the morning are between minus one and plus five degrees.

As reported, the first real onset of winter could be in Upper Austria at the end of the week. “It currently looks in the models as if it would snow in large parts of the country. The quality of the forecast is not yet very high, so it remains exciting,” said meteorologist Liliane Hofer on Sunday in the OÖN interview.
