New Year’s Eve at 18.3 degrees

It’s not a record. With a temperature of 18.3 degrees, the maximum temperature in Aspach (Braunau district) on New Year’s Eve was just as high as in Berndorf in Lower Austria, when the record value was measured there last year. In Upper Austria, such high values have never been measured on New Year’s Eve.

It was unusually mild across the country on the day before the turn of the year. “A southwest flow brought warm air from the Atlantic region around the Canary Islands to Upper Austria,” explains meteorologist Alexander Ohms from GeoSphere Austria. At around 4 degrees, it was midnight and thus also relatively mild at the turn of the year. “However, there have already been significantly higher values at this time in the past when the corresponding westerly wind has blown,” says Ohms.
