Inflation: the number of inquiries to the AK has quintupled

More than 321,000 people in Upper Austria took advantage of the advice of the Chamber of Labor last year. The main focus was on labor and social law issues and consumer protection issues, as AK President Andreas Stangl and his deputy Ernst Stummer announced on Monday.

The issue of inflation was crucial: consultations on electricity and gas prices, pellets would have increased almost fivefold in 2022. These inquiries were often about problems with paying out the climate bonus, says Stangl.

If advice is no longer sufficient, the AK also takes on the legal representation of its members. The number of new files has increased by 22 percent compared to 2021, says Stummer.

More than 7,800 cases have been settled in or out of court. “In employment law, our success rate was almost 80 percent.”

Most cases involved workers in temporary workers, hospitality, trade and transport. Around 83 percent of them were employed in companies “where there was no works council,” emphasized the AK President.

Consultations, interventions and taking legal action: the Upper Austrian Chamber of Labor was able to fight for 105.2 million euros for the people last year. In social law, more than 65 million euros were won.

A dramatic case was also brought to a successful conclusion in 2017. At that time, an employee suffered an accident at work. His leg was pinched so badly that the right lower leg had to be amputated. First of all, the invalidity of the man was estimated at only 35 percent in an expert opinion. Therefore, the private accident insurance denied the accident pension.

The case went through the courts and in the end the accident victim was right. The Supreme Court ruled last year that the disability was 50 percent and awarded the man an additional payment of more than 120,000 euros and a lifelong accident pension of 1,900 euros per month.
