The air is mild, the birds are chirping and the first spring flowers are here: no question, spring is not far off. “And the hobby gardeners are already in the starting blocks and looking forward to getting started”says OÖN organic gardener Karl Ploberger at a press conference with Agricultural Minister Michaela Langer-Weninger and State Gardener Hannes Hofmüller. “There is a clear trend towards self-sufficiency and biodiversity. It is not only important to Upper Austrians to garden non-toxic, but also to be sustainable and insect-friendly.” Information on this – and on the subject in general – will be available again next week at the OÖN-Gartenlandtour.
The plants of the year were also presented at the start of the season: Balcony flower 2023 is the magic bell “Stella Rosella” (small picture), which bears millions of flowers in summer. Catnip was voted Bee Plant of the Year “bee cloud” chosen. “Both are robust and easy to care for – and when you put them together, it ‘rumbles’ in the bed”says Hofmuller.
