The mood of the Austrian population has changed with regard to the expansion of wind, water and solar power plants. In a survey of the electricity industry, which was presented on Wednesday, the pace is too slow for 58 percent. 23 percent think the pace is just right and eight percent think it’s too fast. In 2020, 46 percent still believed that power generation options should be expanded, but in April and November 2022 it was already more than 70 percent.

The trend is evident not only in the surveys, but also in practice, according to Barbara Schmidt, Secretary General of Österreichs Energie. In 2022, the number of meter point requests for a PV feed-in almost quadrupled to 170,000. The number of metering points for photovoltaic systems rose from 167,000 to 218,000 in 2022, an increase of 30 percent. She called on state governors and mayors to show more courage in energy projects and land use.

Verbund boss demands clarity

Verbund boss Michael Strugl, president of the industry association, said that in order to stabilize electricity prices, not only the gas price is decisive, but also the expansion of renewables.

According to the Renewable Energy Expansion Act (EAG), the Renewable Energy Expansion Acceleration Act is now needed. In the EU regulation on this, the expansion of renewable energies is to be granted an “overriding public interest”. Austria is only planning the wording “great interest”. Strugl calls on politicians to adhere to the wording of the EU Commission, which would create clarity for the authorities.
