This is reported by the portal of the newspaper “La Croix” (Saturday), citing the responsible public prosecutor. However, canonical proceedings against the former chairman of the French Bishops’ Conference are still pending.
Ricard reported himself to the bishops’ conference last November for “reprehensible behavior” towards a 14-year-old. This left her with “serious and lasting consequences”. He spoke to the woman about it and “asked her for forgiveness”. Ricard further stated that he had decided to no longer remain silent and to face state and church justice. The case is therefore 35 years ago.
The public prosecutor’s office had officially started the preliminary investigations the day after the voluntary disclosure. This should have clarified whether the allegations for criminal proceedings were sufficient. It should also be determined whether there are other victims. The canonical proceedings, which were also opened in November, are being continued by the Vatican and are not bound by the decisions of the public prosecutor’s office.
