The drought will affect the harvest, with 30% less production

Inavi’s technical adviser, Edward Felixexplained in dialogue with Radio La R, that the effects of the persistent drought augur less production, but at the same time of good quality, reported Prensa Latina.

We are probably facing a loss greater than 30%, pointed out and described the harvest as atomic, due to the adverse consequences in the sector, which also suffered from the heatwave in 2022.

After a tour of Inavi technicians through the departments of cannelloni, Montevideo, Saint Joseph, Cologne and maldonadowhere 90% of Uruguay’s viticulture is concentrated, a loss of around 70 million kilos of grapes was projected.

Felix explained that 20% of the cultivated area is irrigated, but there was also a decrease, which for some producers reached 50%. “We live in a country that we call small, but we have a difference in climate that is really scary,” he told the station.

The expert described the harvest during 2022 as atypical, when there was a harvest of 106 million kilos of grapes. We had come from a prolonged dry period since November, until January 15, when it rained, he pointed out.

Despite the losses for the harvest, the oenologists estimate that the dry climate will deepen some aspects of the wines, mainly the alcoholic degree and the aromatic intensity of the varietals, as well as the color.
