St. Martin turkey farmers are real organic foxes

Innovative “Bio Austria” companies show solutions with forward-looking projects and ideas and have now been awarded the “Bio-Fuchs” innovation prize from Bio Austria. One of the three excellent farms comes from the Mühlviertel – the second place goes to Ingrid and Martin Eckerstorfer from St. Martin: The main pillars of the organic farm are the direct marketing of organic turkeys, organic beef and the rearing of calves for partner companies in of the region. On the farm there are not only animal products, but also organic sunflower oil, organic grain and organic flour as well as organic potatoes.

Short transport routes

In line with climate protection, the small-structured and diversified company does not need long transport routes and keeps the value chain in the region as far as possible. The organic turkeys are slaughtered and cut up directly on site, the organic sunflower oil is pressed in the region. The products of the Eckerstorfer family are mostly sold without or in environmentally friendly packaging materials. “In addition, we are increasingly using social media and revealing recipes for the use and recycling of rather neglected parts of animal products to consumers. The nose-to-tail principle is very important to us, because it is simply part of treating meat with respect,” adds Ingrid Eckerstorfer. The innovation prize was awarded for the 14th time this year. This time the award was all about climate protection and corresponding projects and ideas on the organic farms. Incidentally, the proud “Bio-Fuchs” winners are Reinhard and Birgit Stückler from the Deixler organic farm in St. Margarethen in the Lavanttal valley in Carinthia.
