“Linz is changing, just like the rest of the world”: With these words, City Councilor Dietmar Prammer (SP) introduced today’s press conference on Linz’s city strategy. His message: It is important to react to the changes, from technology to the economy, and at the same time to actively shape them.

This is to be done primarily via the concept paper entitled “Linzer Stadtstrategie 2022”. From a political point of view, the implementation period of ten years is a long one in today’s short-lived time, and the urban development process is never completed anyway, according to Prammer. Measures and instruments would have to be adapted again and again.

The first implementation steps have already been taken, and more are to follow this year. Topics here are, for example, the forthcoming cooperative process in Salzburger Strasse and the completion of the climate change adaptation plan planned for this year.

Municipal preliminary project

Digital urban development methods should also be an important building block. A preliminary project for the creation of a digital twin has already been initiated internally by the municipal authorities, said Hans-Martin Neumann, Director of Urban Development. The basis for this is the well-known, digitally accessible 3D model of the city of Linz. The future, new digital model should collect even more information and make simulations – for example in the traffic sector – possible. Neumann expects the first visible results in “one to two years”.

Prammer sees a lot of potential in the digital twin with regard to the presentation and development of new construction projects. It is also a dream of the future that when projects are presented to the design advisory board, the respective buildings can be examined in their surroundings using virtual reality glasses.

If Helge Langer, chairman of the Green Party, has his way, two points must be clear with Linz’s city strategy: on the one hand, no more municipal properties should be sold, on the other hand, there shouldn’t be any more rededications that would be detrimental to the green belt.
