In Upper Austria, the wolf may not be hunted all year round. Whether this status will change is questionable.

An initial suspicion was confirmed by DNA analysis, said the wolf officer Aldin Selimovic on Thursday of the APA. The next few days will be about identifying the individual. To do this, DNA is compared with existing samples from animals in the area.

The now confirmed cracks date from the night of February 16th. According to Selimovic, one ewe and three lambs were killed, and one seriously injured animal had to be slaughtered. Two other lambs have disappeared. In August and September last year, a total of eight sheep kills in the Langschlag region were traced back to wolves.

The state of Lower Austria reacted to various incidents and sightings in connection with the predator in the previous week. According to LH deputy Stephan Pernkopf (ÖVP), the Lower Austrian Wolf Ordinance, which has been in place since the end of 2018, is now to be adjusted in line with other federal states. The aim is that so-called problem wolves that come too close to settlements can be scared off more quickly in the future by means of warning shots and scare guns. In such cases, the removal, i.e. the shooting in the event of problematic behavior, should also be simplified.
