Argentina withdraws authorization for a flight to the Malvinas Islands with a stopover in Córdoba

“This decision has been reached after presenting to the United Kingdom numerous initiatives to achieve greater connectivity between the Argentine mainland and the Malvinas Islands,” said a statement from the Foreign Ministry.

The Government reported that it withdrew decree authorization for a flight weekly between São Paulo, Brazil, and the Falkland Islands, with a monthly scale in the province of Córdoba, after the decision to finalize an agreement with the United Kingdom in 2016.

“This decision has been reached after presenting to the United Kingdom numerous initiatives to achieve greater connectivity between the Argentine mainland and the Malvinas Islands,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

“However, the British Government has prevented any real and concrete progress in the sense of allowing a direct flight from our mainland to the islands,” added.

Argentina last week asked London to restart the negotiations for the sovereignty of the Islands and suggested holding a meeting to discuss the issue at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

The flight, operated by Latam, was operational for a few months from November 2019 until it was unilaterally suspended by the United Kingdom in March 2020, due to health restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic, explained the Argentine Foreign Ministry.

The Government said that it repeatedly sought to negotiate regular flights between the islands and Argentine territory with the United Kingdom, but the meetings were suspended for various reasons.

“The Argentine Government reiterates its willingness to resume sovereignty negotiations and address a comprehensive agenda of issues that include greater connectivity between the Malvinas Islands and the rest of Argentine territory”, Foreign Ministry pointed out.
