Thousands of women in Montevideo and the departmental capitals of the interior of the country marched this March 8 on the occasion of the International Women’s Day (8M). The mobilization in the country’s capital began at 6:00 p.m., from Plaza Libertad, in a walk along Avenida 18 de Julio to the esplanade of the University of the Republic (School of Law), where a proclamation linked to the feminist cause and gender equality was read.

He PIT-CNT had agreed to join a “women only” strike, under the slogan “Anti-racist and anti-capitalist class feminism”. Last year, the union central had called a “national general strike” on March 8, but this measure was questioned by a group of affiliates considering that, by calling it a general strike, the demands of women were not made visible.

On the other hand, the intersocial feministwhich brings together the feminist collectives of the Uruguaycalled on women to march with the message “Feminist fight: against hunger and oppression”. Some protesters presented banners with pots drawn, alluding to hunger. In one of the messages, it was possible to read “even if you do not lack anything, some lack everything”.
