The first part of the cult “Scream” series is more than a quarter of a century old. Wes Craven has been dead for almost eight years – as the director responsible for the first four “Scream” editions.
“Scream VI” can currently be seen in the cinemas and proves that the cult horror about the mask killer Ghostface, which is designed as a genre parody, can’t be killed.
Directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett show what they can do with very simple yet highly effective means. In terms of content, the storyline that was newly introduced in “Scream V” continues, with Netflix star Jenna Ortega (“Wednesday”) returning in the lead role.
She wants to herald a new chapter in New York with the survivors of the latest series of murders. But the Ghostface killer (or is it several?) is soon back at his merry game of fear. With all its weaknesses – exuberant clichés and references and references to other horror classics – this sequel also shows that “Scream” stands for solid, creepy popcorn cinema. Even if Neve Campbell, star since the “Scream” movie in 1996, is not there for the first time.
