With the rising temperatures, the toads begin their annual spawning migrations. In Linz, they often find themselves on busy roads and thus in great danger. Many are run over. In order to avoid this, the natural history station of the city of Linz is putting up toad fences at Am Langen Zaun in Kleinmünchen on the edge of the Wasserwald and in Ebelsberg on Mönchgrabenstrasse.
Toads fall in buckets
A toad fence works like this: A 30 centimeter high plastic fence prevents the animals from crossing the road. Trying to avoid this obstacle, they fall into buckets sunk into the ground at regular intervals. During daily inspections they are freed, carried across the street and released. In this way, thousands of toads have been saved in recent years. At weekends, care is provided in cooperation with the Linz City Group of the Nature Conservation Union.
