How long has Tino Wawra been head of sports at the second division soccer team Blau-Weiss Linz? The 43-year-old announced yesterday that he would be moving to St. Pölten when his contract expired in the summer. But the final whistle could sound earlier: is it still acceptable at Blau-Weiss Linz in the race for promotion to the Bundesliga against Wawra’s future employer?

“It’s with a heavy heart that I’ve decided to start a new project,” explained Wawra. As early as January 22, the OÖN reported that the German Bundesliga club Wolfsburg wanted to appoint him as sporting director at the cooperation club St. Pölten. Wawra has now officially opted for the Lower Austrians and the enticing prospects for the future that Wolfsburg offers. Wawra: “As a sports director who is far from finished, I want to develop further in a top environment and I also get the support of a German Bundesliga club.”

As a result, Blau-Weiss Linz Managing Director Christoph Peschek now has a large sporting construction site to work on in addition to the new stadium. “Tino was a piece of the jigsaw in my decision to come to Blau-Weiss,” Peschek said when he started in January.

Top offer rejected

That’s why Peschek really wanted to extend his contract with Wawra, “which is why we showed him the club’s appreciation with a top offer.” It wasn’t good enough: Blau-Weiss Linz suffered a defeat against St. Pölten. Now Peschek has to find a successor for Wawra – and as quickly as possible.
