The presiding Archbishop Franz Lackner said that celibacy was also a topic. However, he could no more promise an early decision on priestly celibacy than on the question of the women’s diaconate.

When it comes to compulsory celibacy, you have to clarify the associated questions such as “what are the motives, what do we give up, what will be new” and “make a decision when it’s time”. The Pope recently described celibacy as revisable, but he also said that he would probably not live to see the decision. Lackner’s conclusion: “Nobody is radically opposed to it, and nobody is screaming, it has to come tomorrow.”

As far as measures to combat the climate crisis are concerned, the Bishops’ Conference calls for “consistent action and sometimes unpopular decisions”. In addition, extraordinary efforts are needed to prevent poverty in the country from increasing.
