On March 26, the clocks will change from Central European Time (CET) to Central European Summer Time (CEST). In September 2018, the European Commission proposed to abolish seasonal clock changes. Actually, that should have been the case with the year 2021 – but the clocks are still turned one hour forward in March and one hour back in October. In order to save energy, the time change was reintroduced in 1980 after consultation with the other European countries. Previously, in the years between 1916 and 1920 and from 1940 to 1948, the time in summer was different from that in winter. How do people in Linz feel about this topic?
“In my opinion, the time change is no longer up-to-date. It should be set up again so that we have the same time all year round,” says 55-year-old Anita Neubauer from Linz. The 23-year-old student Alexander Lindinger sees it differently: “In principle, it makes sense. I think it’s better if it’s light in the morning and not pitch black until 9 a.m. That makes it easier for me to get up.” If it were summer time all year round, the sun would not rise until 8:51 a.m. on December 21 in Linz instead of at 7:51 a.m. Conversely, if winter was to last in Linz, sunrise would already be at 4:02 a.m. on June 21, and sunset at 8:07 p.m.
“I think the time change is basically a good thing because it’s light longer in the evening,” says student Anna Strauß from Königswiesen. “If, like today, I have school until 6 p.m., it will still be light when I get home. That’s nice.” 73-year-old Ingeborg Wolfslehner from Garsten also enjoys it when the sun sets later in the evening. “In and of itself, I’m fine with it when it’s lighter again in the evening – that makes me happy. But the change itself gets on my nerves. I’d prefer it if we only had one time or the other. ”
