Lacalle Pou at the Ibero-American Summit: Together we are more

President Luis Lacalle Pou participated in the XXVIII Ibero-American Summit of Heads of State and Governmentwhere he gave a concise speech regarding the meeting’s call for “more just and sustainable” societies, asked for a mea culpa and highlighted the opportunities generated by the green hydrogen in Latin America.

The event, which takes place in Santo Domingo Dominican Republichas the presence of 22 Ibero-American leaders and focuses on environmental issues, food security, digital transformation and access to international financing, in a post-pandemic context.

At the beginning, the president suggested a self-criticism: “There is a tendency, an automatic reflex, to look for those responsible for our ills outside of ourselves. It is always the fault of the United States, China or the great powers. I imagine that when we think of “fair and sustainable” we first look at ourselves from the limits of our countries inwards”.

In addition, in line with his opening position, he highlighted the importance of reaching “agreements with Europe”. “The continued failures and frustrations of finishing these alliances ends up frustrating those partners who were so optimistic at the beginning,” he said.

Then, he specified each of the points and stressed that the justice it can only be ensured with strong institutions, separation of powers and respect for human rights. “The authoritarian temptations to believe that one is good enough to impart justice and make a just society is a temptation that we should not have”, he stated.

Later, Lacalle Pou spoke about the sustainability and recalled that the term does not apply only to environmental issues, but also means having “political and democratic processes.” In this sense, he marked: “The strongest in any regime come out ahead. If there’s one thing democracy does, it’s protect those who really can’t do it for themselves.”

Green hydrogen is a “precious opportunity” for the region, said Lacalle Pou

Even so, the President was “optimistic” regarding the sustainability of the ecosystem. Regarding this, he recalled how, “for the first time in a long time”, in most international forums “The environmental goes hand in hand with the economic”. Two aspects that, in his opinion, showed a “historical divorce.”

“For the first time in a long time, from the United Nations (UN) to the different international credit banks, they are beginning to understand and share that sustainable processes have their economic valuation”, he added.

In turn, he highlighted the situation in which the region finds itself in terms of renewable energy generation. “We are the largest food producers; the new renewable energies, basically the green hydrogenhas in Latin America and in our countries a precious opportunity”.

In a passage from his speech, Lacalle Pou joked: “These forums are sometimes very similar to a group therapy”. In addition, he assured: “Together we are more, each country has its strengths and weaknesses. Let’s work on living with our disagreements, as long as we are convinced that our things in common are what make us strong”.
