The debate on artificial intelligence is present at the Language Congress

Within the framework of the IX International Congress of the Spanish Language which started this monday Cadiz and where writers, academics, journalists, professors and scientists discuss various topics over seven days, the need to include Spanish in the artificial intelligence career was raised, arguing that the tools provided by this technology “they can’t speak only english”.

With the participation of the director of the Royal Spanish Academy (RAE) Santiago Muñoz Machado and the presence of representatives of technology companies, one of the panels of the Congress was dedicated to analyzing the future of Spanish linked to advances in artificial intelligence.

Under the title “Unity and diversity of Spanish. The tradition and the challenge of artificial intelligence”researchers presented the progress achieved within the project “Spanish Language and Artificial Intelligence” (LEIA) which seeks to “take care of the use of correct Spanish in technological media” to “avoid losing the unity that allows more than 585 million people to communicate in our language without difficulties”, according to the RAE on its official website.

This initiative, which has the support of Telefónica, was joined by technology companies such as Microsoft, Amazon, Google, Twitter and Facebook.

“The competitor is English and now the programming is dominated by this language, but Spanish may be more present. It is not a question of time, but of political will: bet more on building these technologies and not so much on being the consumers” , said the director of institutional relations of Amazon Web Services, Anthony Vargas.

For his part, the director of Artificial Intelligence at Microsoft, david carmona He agreed that it is “fundamental” that the Spanish “join the revolution” that involves artificial intelligence. “It is necessary to make Spanish a first-class language and that it is better spoken in technology,” he said, before explaining that, in the case of Microsoft, “it is committed to products that include the Dictionary of the Spanish Language” .

Miguel EscassiDirector of Institutional Relations and Public Policies at Google Spain and Portugal he emphasized the ways in which AI is used. “They are algorithms with universal models of Spanish and, right now, there is no longer a technological problem: more data always helps, but now with these algorithms you learn by using them,” he explained.

In addition, he stressed that there is “a sort of ethical decalogue for its products that seeks to avoid errors in the use of gender or stereotypes.”

Since November of last year, when a company associated with Microsoft allowed the public use of the ChatGPT platform, the AI shows an overwhelming reception.

In this context, carmona He insisted on the paradigm shift that has occurred with AI. “We have gone from reasoning with a language of numbers to another of human language. Thus, the training is now with the language found on the Internet: from books to the Wikipediaand we also ask the machines for things with words”, he highlighted.

Regarding the debate on what is the quality of Spanish in this area, during the XVI ASALE Congress In 2019, not only several technology companies subscribed to the LEIA project, but various products have been prepared in the language. An example is Amazon Web Services (AWS) who created a test with a system for analyzing tens of thousands of documents in Spanish that focuses both on the use of foreign words, on the linguistic richness of the texts, and on errors.

“We have not given this work a scientific character, but it serves as a preliminary step: we are still discovering the potential of AI,” he warned. vargas about this tool that already writes university essays, composes videos, images, poems and stories and forces us to reflect on its implications in each field.
