The question of how to make your own clay courts fit for the upcoming season is a concern for numerous amateur tennis players throughout Upper Austria in the spring. Platzbau expert Thomas Schützender knows a possible answer to this, because the man from Mühlviertel and his company are currently helping several clubs to winter out every day.
This usually doesn’t take longer than an afternoon, but patience is required after that. Depending on the weather, it will take seven to ten days after the company’s work before the courts can be played on. However, a championship match should not be held on the freshly wintered facility: “The course has to be played in carefully so that the surface becomes hard. It makes no sense to play full throttle right away,” says Schützeneder.
According to the Mühlviertler, the personal responsibility of the club members for the maintenance of the course is particularly important. “If a player notices a hole, then he should plug it himself immediately. The course is all the nicer afterwards.”
