Argentine carriers suspended the blockade on the border

They will meet with the Minister of Transport and Public Works, José Luis Falero. They claim against the new freight payment system.

The Argentine carriers gave a truce to unemployment of activities towards Uruguay that had been happening for two weeks, due to their claim on the payment of freight by transfer, after confirming that they will have a meeting with the Minister of Transportation and Public Works, Jose Luis Falero.

The strikes had been taking place at the three border crossings that link Uruguay with Argentina: the General San Martin International Bridge – that joins Gualeguaychú with Fray Bentos – the General Artigas International Bridge – between the Argentine city of Colón and Paysandú – and, finally, the Salto Grande International Bridge – that joins Concordia with Salto.

The objective of the self-convened group was to be heard by the Uruguayan government, in relation to the “negative” consequences and the “zero profitability” that they claimed that the new regulations implied for Argentine truckers operating in Uruguay.

The problem for Argentine carriers lies in the decree that the government issued regarding freight payments in response to a claim from the International Road Transportation Chamber of Uruguay (Catidu).

For the entity, that the Argentine trucks collect in cash was a unfair competition, therefore, the Executive forced these transactions to be carried out by transfer. For businessmen from the neighboring country, this meant a decline in revenuesince they charged dollars at the official price on this side of the border and then sold them in the more expensive parallel market on the other side of the bridge.

This is why the carriers claim a clear inequality in costs because the value of the tolls are very high and because the Uruguayan carriers load fuel on the Argentine side and pay much cheaper.

On the other hand, they want the current regime to be extended until October, when the presidential elections will take place in Argentina, which, according to the carriers, would give them a break because they believe that the Argentine government will change and the exchange rate will be lifted.
