Uruguay signed an agreement with Germany for green hydrogen

Uruguay signed with Germany an important agreement to jointly develop the second energy transition and strengthen ties in what future exports of green hydrogen and its derivatives.

under the “Berlin Energy Transition Dialogue 2023” (BETD) which takes place in the German capital, the Minister of Industry, Energy and Mining (MIEM), Omar Paganini, signed the agreement that incorporates Uruguay into a select group of countries with which Germany cooperates closely in energy matters. Among the advantages that the country could acquire is the possibility of exporting hydrogen to Europe, As reported Suppliers.

The signing of the agreement took place at the Room “Willy Brandt” of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs German, and counted with the participation of Minister Paganini and robert habeckVice Chancellor of Germany and Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection.

“The initiative reinforces Uruguay’s commitment to the decarbonization and Germany’s recognition of our track record and potential. Uruguay can develop a central role as provider of the new renewable energy sources, with a clearly complementary profile with European countries”, considered Paganini. “Today, the diversification of suppliers is strategic in geopolitical terms and the countries of the South, with a surplus in renewable energy, are part of the solution,” he added.

Energy Partnership is an instrument of Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action for countries committed to the full energy transition, in order to create a global network to facilitate the exchange of intergovernmental energy policies and promote innovation in that area and economic cooperation. With this agreement, Uruguay will join Algeria, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Ethiopia, India, Japan, Jordan, Mexico, Morocco, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey, Tunisia, Ukraine and United Arab Emirates.

As reported by the government, the signing of a joint declaration of intent establishes a general framework to promote the energy policy dialogue and technical cooperation. This will allow the development and improvement of sustainable infrastructures, as well as the creation of modern and efficient markets, in particular, through the promotion of a greater use of renewable energies and related technologies.

The importance of Uruguay in the green hydrogen scenario

“The production of hydrogen and derivatives that Ancap promotes through various projects are an important part of Uruguay’s presence here in Berlin,” stressed the president of the National Administration of Fuel, Alcohol and Portland (Ancap), Alejandro Stipanicic, in reference to the “Berlin Energy Transition Dialogue 2023”, where the country is presenting its long-term energy transition plans internationally.

Green hydrogen for Uruguay means a great billing opportunity and, according to MIEM estimates, by 2040 it could represent $2.1 billion, after a strong investment of 6,000 million dollars. For said disbursement, Uruguay XXI is looking for the arrival of new investors, including Spanish, German and Nordic companies.

Likewise, the authorities are promoting Uruguayan projects around green hydrogen, and signing important agreements such as the one they will close with Germany.
