This week the environmental and social impact studies of the Binational Hydroelectric Complex between Uruguay Argentina which is in its second phase of Renovation and Modernization Projectas well as a space for consultations and suggestions from the public.

The event took place in Salto Grande and had the participation of the vice president of the Delegation of Uruguay, Nicolas Irigoyenthe president of the Argentine Delegation, Luis Benedetto, the general managers of Salto Grande, Javier Murguia and Gabriel Sardi, as well as representatives of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

During the meeting, the conclusions of the studies of the environmental and social impact of the Hydroelectric Complex, in addition to channels and participation mechanisms available to interested parties, as well as the possibility of a space for consultation and suggestions by the general public.

The vice president of the Uruguayan delegation highlighted the importance of Salto Grande and described it as “much more than energy generation; is binational integrationsocial and economic development for our Region, and is, in addition, intellectual capacity of world reference”.

The president of the Argentine delegation, for his part, remarked that it is a great opportunity for regional development. “This process of renewal of assets and other tasks will take many years, about 25, and will allow our region and our countries to offer services and equipment for the work carried out in the Complex for its renovation,” said Benedetto.

One of the general managers of Salto Grande, Javier Murguia, remarked that the modernization project of the Binational Hydroelectric Complex will extend its useful life by 40 years and is made up of for 200 projects. For this, an approximate investment of 1,000 million dollars to 25 years.

What does the renovation of Salto Grande imply?

The renovation of the Binational Hydroelectric Complex is in its second stage of modernization and renovation. Among the works planned for this stage are the renovation of lifting systemsmodernization of various mechanical and electrical auxiliary systems, the renewal of weir hydromechanical systems and powerhouse.

Also included are replacement maneuvering and power equipment in the 500 kV substations, conditioning and improvement of civil infrastructure; erosion mitigation works on both margins; improvements in environmental and social management and the modernization of its corporate management systems.
