New expansion joints under the tram rails, which are being carried out in coordination with the rail replacement of the Linz Linien, are the reason why only two lanes in each direction will be available on the bridge from May 17th until probably June 12th. At the same time, this is also preparatory work for the future general renovation of the Nibelungen Bridge, which, however, is only to be carried out after the completion of the West Ring Bridge and thus in autumn 2024.

According to the state of Upper Austria. the construction measures are carried out with “the least possible disruption to traffic” and “the greatest possible safety in the construction area”. Linz AG’s preparatory work will begin on May 8th and will be carried out in night operations from Monday to Thursday from 9:30 p.m. to 4 a.m. From 9 p.m. on May 17, lanes will be reduced, which will probably apply until 4 a.m. on June 12. There may be a reduction to one lane during the night.

The tram runs without restrictions on weekdays, i.e. Monday to Friday, and a rail replacement service is set up on the weekends. Work is concentrated on weekends, public holidays and at night. In this way, tram operations can be maintained. The fact that one lane is also closed during the week is argued that the conversion work would be time-consuming and that, also with regard to safety, the decision was made not to reverse the traffic routing during the week but to leave it in place , even if there is no work, according to the state.
